Rice Planting and Harvest

We had seven guests stay for periods of up to or over a month, which means we were able to accomplish a lot! Our chicks grew into chickens, we expanded the chicken house, renovated our men's dormitory, cleaned the kura, and transformed one of our sheds into a cafe space. We also facilitated two fantastic camps for youth from Japan and Germany with the Hanover YMCA and Fukuyama YMCA, as well as an American Summer Camp English party for local elementary school students!

In other news, the rice that we planted in our paddy in June has at last been harvested! We began in late September and the process to over a week. At Peace Culture Village, we strive to be energy self dependent and so endeavor to use as little oil and oil-powered machinery as possible. With the help of local community members, we planted and harvested our rice by hand.

Planting the rice in June entailed making grid lines in the muddy rice paddy with a rake to make

sure we planted the rice in straight rows. We then took rice seedlings that Bei had begun raising in our greenhouse and stuck them in the mud along the grid. Walking in the rice paddy with bare feet was quite fun!

After 4-5 months of growing in the paddy, the rice was ready to harvest. We cut bundles of ricestalks with scythes and bundled them using rice straw. We constructed fence-like structures made of bamboo on which to hang the rice to dry.

The next step will be threshing and processing the rice. I'll make sure to keep you all posted!
